Fort Gondo
Fort Gondo is an infantry fortress that had a central strategic importance in the Gondo Gorge valley constriction. At the beginning of the 20th century and during active service in the First World War, the military expanded the existing 19th century defences in the Gondo Gorge into a barrage. The fort included, among other things, a flanking gallery from which the strategically important road section opposite the "Great Gallery" could be monitored. The fort was further expanded and modernised shortly before and during the Second World War, when the barrage became important as part of the Reduit defence. In the area of the fortress, the Stockalperweg leads about 350 m through the connecting gallery between the west and east galleries.
Openings
The fortress is open for you on selected Saturdays (https://www.ecomuseum.ch/museen-und-sammlungen/museen/fort-gondo) or on request.
Good to know
Fort Gondo can be reached by private vehicle or by post bus from Brig or Iselle.
Free parking is available at the north entrance, but it is somewhat narrow.
If you arrive by post bus, the post bus stops are to the north and south of Fort Gondo. You walk about 40 to 60 minutes to the fort in either option. We recommend combining the visit with a hike on the Stockalper Trail.
