Gorge

Gondo Gorge

On the northern slope of the gorge are two protected areas of cantonal importance. Thanks to the influence of southern alpine fauna and flora elements, such beautiful and rare plants as the Strauss saxifrage, the Valais glueweed or the southern alpine tulip grow on the steep, south-exposed valley slopes. With a bit of luck, the blue rock thrush, a typical bird species of the Mediterranean region, can also be observed on the rugged rock faces.

The Gondo Gorge was once barely traversable. The muleteers bypassed the gorge by marching up the Furggu, to Zwischbergen and from there to Gondo. But Kaspar Stockalper is said to have already crossed the gorge. After him, Napoleon Bonaparte also recognised the strategic importance of the Simplon Pass. He had the pass and the particularly challenging Gondo Gorge made passable.
