Hiking

The mountains are calling

The Valais has plenty of beautiful and varied hikes to offer, with extraordinary hiking experiences on offer throughout the year between Brig, the Simplon Pass and Zwischbergen. Some of the hikes are best enjoyed during a specific season. Think an autumnal hike through the oldest larch forests in Switzerland, a route surrounded by flowering Alpine roses in the mountain springtime or a refreshing hike along irrigation channels at the height of summer. Discover the Brig-Simplon region on foot.

Hiking trails in the Brig-Simplon region

Long-time favourites

Responsible for planning the next hiking trip but have no idea where to go? We’ve got you covered. You certainly can’t go wrong with our long-time favourite routes. These are appealing hikes without any major obstacles, which have dining options at the beginning, along the way or at the end and are easily accessible by public transport.

Summit experiences in summer

Want to top off your mountain hike with a summit experience? Around the Simplon Pass, a variety of routes are available with different levels of difficulty, with spectacular views (and usually also a summit cross) waiting for you at the top. One such example is the Staldhorn, which can be reached in just one hour from the Simplon Pass (4 km).

Larch forests in autumn

We recommend saving the following hikes for autumn. In the Rothwald/Wasenalp area and near the village of Simplon in the Hittuwald forest, the old ‘Rohnä’ larches are in the majority. Both forests are among the oldest in Switzerland, with larches up to 10 metres in circumference. The blaze of colour in autumn is absolutely stunning.

Hikes to mountain lakes

A mountain lake is a highlight on any hike. We have compiled a selection of beautiful routes for you here that take you past mountain lakes. Although not all mountain lakes are suitable for bathing, they are all great places to stop for a rest, enjoy the fresh air and have a picnic. Our selection includes easy routes and challenging mountain hikes.

Alpine hikes

Several officially signposted Alpine routes exist in the Brig-Simplon region. These routes are marked blue/white, are more challenging than the mountain trails and sometimes require you to use your hands to move forward.

There are other routes in Alpine terrain that are worth checking out. However, these are not maintained, signposted or tested. Those who dare to venture out on these trails must be very well prepared, have experience and ideally be accompanied by a mountain guide.
